Sweet Potatoes Are For More Than Holidays!

I love sweet potatoes!!  I know some people want a baked sweet potato drenched in butter…or a sweet potato casserole loaded with butter, brown sugar and marshmallows! And I agree—those are YUMMY!

Personally, I love a sweet potato baked—just like it is. It is full of nutrition and one food we should have in our diets more frequently. This edible tuberous root is long and tapered and the flesh can range in colors. The sweeter ones have red, pink or orange flesh.

Need Some Help With Your Hair?

Do you wish you had the silky, shiny hair you had as a child? Think about all the things we do to our hair—chemical processing (color, highlights, lowlights, permanents, straighteners) –styling tools (hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons)—the way we style our hair (ponytails, braiding, weaves and extensions). And what about sun? All of these can cause damage to our hair.

These processes can result in damage such as split ends, dull, lackluster, frizzy hair. What can we do? We want the latest styles, but we do not want to wind up with damaged hair.

One important thing is to regularly have your hair trimmed—even if you are in the process of growing it out!! Get rid of those split ends and your hair will automatically look better. Don’t over-do the chemical processes and remember not to pull your hair tightly into braids or ponytails—this causes breakage.

There Are Good Fats?

You want me to eat FATS? Really? In all my years of dieting, I thought I was to avoid fats in order to lose weight? I thought I had to avoid fats to protect my heart and keep my cholesterol down. And now you want me to eat fats?

From my research, the key is knowing which fats are good for us. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2005 Dietary Guidelines tell us to get around 10% of our daily calories from fats.  The HEALTHY FATS- unsaturated fats which include polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fats. Both mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Healthy fats are not packaged processed foods, fried foods, cakes, cookies, etc.  which contain saturated or trans fats

So what are some of these Healthy Fats?

Don’t Let Stress Rule Your Life!

Trying to keep up with the daily demands of LIFE (job, finances, home, family, etc) can be overwhelming!! No matter how hard we try to stay calm, things come up that cause stress in our lives. One main stressor for me in the past two years has been my car!! It is customized (at great expense) for my husband’s power chair so we cannot just trade it in. We have had some major bills and every time the light comes on signaling a problem, I can feel the stress mounting in my body. I have done nothing to cause the car problem and I cannot fix it myself so I should be able to just take it to the mechanic and not be concerned….but I have not figured out how to do that!

How about you? What is stressing you? Do you ever experience anxiety–panic attacks–feel worried–feel your heart race? You are not alone!! Nearly 1 in 5 adults suffer from anxiety.

Why Exercise After 50?

Are you over 50? Remember when we were in our 20’s and 30’s? I would exercise with my main goal being to fit into a certain size clothes…be able to proudly go to the beach…look as good as my friends. How about you?

Now that I am a little older, my priorities have changed. At 50 plus, my health and well-being are my main concerns. My body is not the same as it was in my younger years so the way I exercise has had to change. I have a good life now and I am independent of needing help to enjoy my life…and I want it to stay that way!

I will list a few reasons we need to exercise and the best things to do. I am sure you can add to this list. Exercise to build or maintain muscle mass. Our metabolism slows as we age and muscles burn more calories than fat. Exercise can help with illnesses like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis and many more.
