Penny Wise Pound Foolish

We have all heard the old British saying—“penny wise pound foolish”. This means we might focus on saving pennies that in the long run cost us larger amounts of money. We all want to save money, but don’t forget the larger picture.

Okay, I admit it!! I have been penny wise and pound foolish. My mother was very economical. She had to be!! My dad did not have a high paying job and for years she couldn’t work because my little brother was sick and his medicines were very expensive. My mother knew more ways to cook a pound of hamburger that were delicious than you could ever imagine.

I guess I learned from my mom and I shop for good sales and most of the time, I get great deals and save a lot of money, but sometimes my desire to be thrifty outweighs my better judgement. For instance, I might not purchase a favorite fruit or vegetable because it is expensive….but will turn around and buy candy or cookies or cake!! Those items are not good for me and if you figure the price per ounce, the cost can be quite expensive. I would have been better off with my favorite—watermelon—even though it was pretty pricey!

We drive a distance to save 5 cents a gallon on gas—but how much gas do we use to get to the station?

We get a new credit card because of some incentive. Sometimes we get a discount to transfer our balance from another credit card and slowly pay off our balance…accumulating hundreds of dollars in finance fees.

How often do we do that with our health? We don’t go to the doctor for regular check-ups or tests because of the co-pay. Then we have a health problem or an emergency!!

Remember this:
“Health is an investment, not an expense”

If we have poor health, this can change every aspect of our lives. If we don’t take care of ourselves and develop health problems, they cannot always be reversed or the process of getting healthy again can take its toll on us financially.

Have you ever looked at a supplement and thought—I cannot afford that? If it would benefit you and your health, can you afford not to try it? I checked on one of my supplements recently and figured the cost per day. It was just pennies and I am certainly worth that!! How about you?

Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish. Take care of your health. Get regular exams with your healthcare professional and consider adding supplements that might enhance your health. I am all for saving money—just be sure these savings will not cost you more in the long run. Take care of your body—is it the only place you have to live.
